References to Tenchi Muyo!

Tenchi Muyo! ruled the 90s on VHS with an arsenal containing space pirates, alien princesses, energy swords and the occasional cat-rabbit hybrid that turns

into a spaceship. But Tenchi really reigned supreme with its goodnatured, wishy-washy teen hero surrounded by a half-dozen hot chicks. Ordinary high school student Tenchi Masaki unwittingly releases the space piratess Ryoko, who's been trapped in his grandfather's shrine for generations. As it turns out, Ryoko’s presence attracts the attention of Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami, mad scientist Washu, a Galaxy Police detective—and a whole lot of trouble, as the various girls decide to move into Tenchi's house and duke it out for his affections.

Although Tenchi has been revisited countless times in movies and TV series (see page 60 for more), the original 13-episode OVA has maintained a special place in history. Top-notch animation, a boldly original sci-fi setting, hilarious characters and even a little tear-jerking tenderness make this the very best Tenchi incarnation of all.
